Electric Substations are one of the parts of power system and are used for transferring power from the generating point to load centers. Below is the list of some of the important components of substation.
Different Components of Substations:
Busbars: Many outgoing and incoming circuits are connected to it (busbars). The function of busbars is to receive generated power from the incoming circuit and then delivering the generated power to the outgoing circuits.
Surge Arrestor (also known as Lightning Arrestor): Surge Arrestors discharges over voltage surge to the earth and protects the equipment from switching surges. Generally, Surge Arrestors are connected between ground and phase conductor. There are two types of surge arrestors that are available. One is the Gapped Arrester and the other one is the Gapless Zinc (also referred to as oxide arresters).
Isolators (commonly called disconnecting switches): These (isolators) are provided for isolating the live parts for maintenance. These isolators are operated under no load. These are also interlocked with circuit breakers.
Earth Switch: It is used to discharge the voltage on the circuit for safety. Generally, it is mounted on the frame of the isolators.
